Earthquake Preparation

by Rob Zwemmer

We all have to remember that even though we live in one of the most fabulous locations in the country, it does bear the distinction of being “earthquake country.” Every year we have a little shaker or two, but geologists do caution that the “big one” could strike at any time and we should be prepared at home and at work. Here are a few important tips to keep your home and business “earthquake ready.”

* Make sure shelving, entertainment centers, flatscreen TVs and bookcases are securely fastened to walls, and all large and fragile objects are placed on lower shelves. Pictures and mirrors should be hung away from sleeping and seating areas.

* Identify safe places to retreat to when an earthquake strikes. Dash under sturdy furniture, such as a desk or solid wood coffee table, and certainly away from windows and other breakables that could shatter.

*Prepare an earthquake kit packed with sustainable items to get you through the first few days after the event. Emergency services may not be available for awhile, so you and your family may be on your own. Have a can opener, canned goods, fresh batteries, a radio and plenty of bottled water on hand. Check and replace these items at least once a year to ensure they are always fresh and useable in case of an emergency.

*Be sure to keep your homeowner’s policy at an accessible place in case you need to refer to it following the event.

Advance planning and preparation can help you ride out the effects if “the big one” ever strikes.

8 Ways to Improve Your Credit Score

by Rob Zwemmer

8 Ways to Improve Your Credit Score

Credit scores, along with your overall income and debt, are a big factor in determining if you’ll qualify for a loan and what loan terms you’ll be able to qualify for.

1.      Check for and correct errors in your credit report. Mistakes happen, and you could be paying for someone else’s poor financial management.

2.      Pay down credit card bills. If possible, pay off the entire balance every month. However, transferring credit card debt from one card to another could      lower your score.

3.      Don’t charge your credit cards to the maximum limit.

4.      Wait 12 months after credit difficulties to apply for a mortgage. You’re penalized less for problems after a year.

365 Things to do in Palm Springs - Historic Cabot's Pueblo Museum

by Rob Zwemmer

Historic Cabot’s Pueblo Museum – Desert Hot Springs

Always a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is a unique structure built entirely of reclaimed materials. Homesteader Cabot Yerxa built it
on his property back in 1913, and worked at the site until his death in 1965.
The pueblo has four stories, 35 rooms and unusual features including old telephone poles, wagon parts, and various discarded items innovatively refurbished and refashioned and used throughout its construction. Cabot Yerxa’s colorful lifestyle, which included adventure travels around the globe, is highlighted in the guided tours. Yerxa discovered the Mission Spring Aquifer, the source of the world-famous water
that placed Desert Hot Springs on the map for its award-winning drinking water and rejuvenating spas. The two wells, both hot and cold were considered a miracle, hence the name Miracle Hill for the area.

It’s a picturesque drive up to the museum, about 10 minutes from the Palm Drive exit. You will enjoy the sense of peace, the rustic charm and rich history that helped shape
the Coachella Valley.
